Duty free goods
The Canary Islands enjoy the benefits of a duty free status. We purchased some Cigarettes (3 packs on special offer = 600) from Gatwick. We knew full well that this was over our limit. When we arrived at our departure gate, there was a large sign on the wall outlining how much duty free goods you are allowed to take. We were clearly over this limit. Oh well, wait and see what happens.
We arrived at Las Palmas Airport. Went through passport control and straight out to the concourse where our Airtours rep was waiting for us. There was no customs desk! So we need not have worried about it! I am not suggesting you exceed your limit, but what the heck!
During our stay, we were offered loads of advice as to where to buy duty free cigs and spirits. The local Spar shop in Playa Del Cura, has a wide range of goods at competitive prices. They are however cheaper in Puerto Rico, but you will have to search a very large shopping centre to find the best deal. A trip to PR costs about 600pts each way in a taxi.
As an example from the Spar shop, 200 Superkings were 2345pts about £9.00. A 1.5lt bottle of Bacardi was also about the same price.
We have always bought our duty frees' at the airport. Just like we did this time. DON'T BUY THEM THERE - THEY ARE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE.
